Women work part-time

Three times as many women than men work part-time. Many of them want to have a full-time job, a new report from Fafo, Institute for Labour and Social Research, shows. According to the report 41.5 percent of women work part-time, for men the number is 12.9 percent.

A mall with success

Sandvika Storsenter has never had a higher turnover than today. As the only mall in Norway Sandvika had more than 3 billion NOK in turnover in 2009. The turnover of Sandvika Storsenter made out almost one sixth of the turnover of Olav Thon Gruppen that owns 17 malls. – We have seen good numbers for for a good while, and we have increased on the numbers from last year.

Norwegian apples in stores

The first Norwegian apples reached the grocery stores this week. It is the early variety Geneva Early that is now being marketed. The season for Norwegian plums is also starting now with early varieties. There is a small supply of sweet cherries, but they sell very well.

Beer sales hit by bad weather

E.C. Dahls, a brewery in Trondheim, reports of a ten percent reduction in the sale of beer compared with July last year. The sale of beer in May and June in the central regions of Norway was good. But other regions are worse of. Only Oslo sold more beer compared with July last year, than the central regions. In the western part of Norway the sale of beer is down 15 percent.

Orkla sells Rieber interest for 500 million NOK

Orkla is selling all of its shares in Rieber & Søn for 500 million NOK. Last week Orkla accepted a price of 40.50 NOK per share for its 12.4 million shares in Rieber & Søn. Rieber is known for its brands like Toro, Denja, Mr. Lee, Vossafår, Black Boy and Sopps.

Advertised lower prices – prices now higher than before
Kiwi, a grocery chain, bragged in advertisements a few months ago that they were reducing prices on a range of products. Actually the price on those products have increased compared with previous prices. Kiwi has for long time advertised with regular, low prices, and has in several campaigns said it has reduced prices on some products.

26th of August is grocery day
Everyone with an interest for the grocery business should visit Ålesund on August 26. It is the day for Dagligvaredagen (the grocery day). According to Reidar Molthe, publisher of Dagligvarehandelen, it is probably the best program ever.

Consumption of milk is increasing
The consumers in Norway drink more milk and eat more dairy products than last year, according to recent numbers from the information office for diary products. The results are based on market numbers from the first quarter in 2010, compared with the same period last year.

Q-Meieriene increased sales by 15 percent
Q-Meieriene, a dairy company, increased sales by 46 million NOK in the first six months of the year. The company launched "Skyr", a protein dense and low fat yoghurt-like product at the end of last year, and relaunched Q chocolate milk in February. The managing director, Bent Myrdahl, will intensify the hunt for new innovations.

Posten fined 102 million NOK by ESA
On March 1, Posten, the Norwegian postal service, opened its first 18 postal offices in grocery stores. Posten demanded that they were alone in supplying this service from NorgesGruppen, ICA, Shell and other store owners. Agreements like this one are not in it self illegal, but because Posten has a dominant position in this market it has been fined 102 million NOK by ESA, the EFTA surveillance authority.

Results from Friele are down
The annual result from Kaffehuset Friele, shows that there is less money in coffee than it used to be. The income thoughhas increased slightly since 2008.
The director of the coffee house, Olav Munch, says to the newspaper BA that the increase in turnover is because the price of coffee has increased from the retail point. But costs have increased more. Last year Friele sold 13 000 ton of coffee, or 1.5 billion cups of coffee. (p5)
