Steen & Strøm is buying in Sweden

Steen & Strøm, a big mall chain in Norway, has for an extended period of time developed the downtown of Mölndal, Sweden. The company has earlier bought three central properties in the city Steen & Strøm is now buying one more, writes Fastighetsvärlden.

Should look into the use of phosphates in meat

Oikos, the national movement of organic producers and consumers in Norway, has asked the Norwegian Consumer Council to investigate use of phosphates in the meat business industry. NRK, The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, has lately been focusing on the way the fishing industry uses water and phosphate to increase the weight of fish. The Norwegian Consumer Council has asked the police to investigate the practise as fraud. Oikos has now asked the council to look if the meat industry uses the same practise. 


Ica with complete makeover

Rimi will beat Rema on price, and Ica will be better than Meny in the upmarket segment. That is what Ica Norway aims to achieve with one of the biggest restructures of all time of a grocery chain in Norway. According to Bjørn Takle Friis, the information manager of Ica Norway, the chain will be a total renewal. He admits that Ica has been over its head for a time; a situation that culminated when the management met with its franchisees in an emergency meeting in September.


Norwegians have optimistic view of the economy

More Norwegians have an optimistic view of the future of the Norwegian economy. But most are not planning to spend. The expectations of the economy have increased since the end of 2009 and it is increasing. - The positive development in the private economy should have made people spend more money, but they are not, says Arne Hyttnes of Finance Norway, the trade organisation for banks, insurance companies and other financial institutions in Norway. Hyttnes believes that people are following the economic situation in Europe and that they are aware that Norway is in a privileged situation. At the same time they are uncertain how the turmoil will affect them in the long run.

Olav Thon grows in Sweden

Olav Thon, the biggest owner of real estate in Norway, expands its business in Sweden. Its three malls Sweden had a combined growth in turnover of more than one billion this year. – In total they have increased turnover by 17.5 percent, says Tron Harald Bjerke of Olav Thon. Last year the total turnover of the three malls Olav Thon owns in Sweden was five billion NOK. Nordby was the biggest with a turnover of more than three billion NOK. This year the turnover will be more than six billions NOK.

Most men have not started Christmas shopping What women want

With four weeks left before Christmas, half have started shopping for the holidays. Most men though, have not. Six out of ten have yet to prepare anything for the most important time of the year. In a survey conducted n Monday, 52 percent said they had started shopping for Christmas. The women are not surprisingly more eager than men, and the old are somewhat ahead of the young. 65 percent of the women asked in the survey, said they had started Christmas shopping. 11 percent said they had done their Christmas shopping all ready.

If the mall is clean, the customers have access to many and orderly toilets and parking is easy, then the women will come, according to a new survey from mall operator Steen & Strøm. - It is surprising that order and cleanliness and the number of toilets is more important the selection of stores, says Karl Fredrik Lund, the marketing director of Steen & Strøm. The survey’s findings are in many areas similar to what Paco Underhill described in his book “What Women Want”.


Minister of agriculture considers minimum price Orkla considers sale of Bakers

- There is a possibility that we will set a minimum price on groceries, says the minister of agriculture, Lars Peder Brekk. He has noticed many reactions on the give away prices of pork rib. - People react when holiday food is used to lure in customers.
All the grocery chains have been selling rib for less than their buying price lately. Pork rib has cost as little as 15 NOK per kilo. The grocer Sjur Gran at the Meny store in Revetal wants a ban that makes it illegal to sell pork rib below the buying price.

Orkla Brands is considering selling Norway's leading bakery company, Bakers. A sale process is now being initiated, with a view to having a new owner in place by the end of the first half of 2011. Bakers has undergone significant restructuring in the past few years and is now a highly competitive company.


Christmas is shopping for women Increased use of payment cards

Norwegians are divided in their view of the upcoming Christmas shopping. More than half of the women look forward to it. Men have another perception, according to a survey from Nets. The Christmas survey TNS Gallup has done of behalf of Nets shows big differences in our liking of Christmas shopping. While 52 percent of the women look forward to the Christmas shopping, only 20 percent of the men do. Women under 30 are enjoying it the most. 69 percent of the women between 15 and 29 years are looking forward to buy for Christmas.

According to numbers from Nets, a supplier of payment card services, the use of payment cards is increasing. By the end of October Nets had registered 900 million transactions by the use of a payment card. That is an increase of nine percent compared with the same period last year. - We believe that that the number will pass one billion in the beginning of December, if the growth continues, something we have every reason to believe, says the information manager of Nets, Sigbjørn Larsen.


New CEO of NorgesGruppen Seafood export reaches record levels

The board of NorgesGruppen AS has today decided on Tommy Korneliussen as the new CEO after Sverre Leiro. He will take over the helm on April 1 2001. Korneliussen (61) has since NorgesGruppen ASA was founded been an executive director of retail/property and a member of the management group of the company. He was hired by Joh Johannson AS in 1998 after having spent 17 years in Coop Øst. Currently he works with concept development, market analysis, establishing, property and value increasing services. He also has the responsibility for the professional market.

In October the export of seafood from Norway was worth 5.8 billion NOK, according to new numbers from Statistic Norway, and by that beating the last export record from September when the export was worth 5.6 billion NOK. The export value has increased by 21 percent compared with October last year. Salmon made out 2.2 billion NOK of the seafood export in October, an increase of 700 million NOK compared with the same month last year. While the seafood export increased, the trade surplus fell compared with October last year. The trade surplus was 23.4 billion NOK in October. (E24)
